050618 Gun controllers: why do you push a policy that you KNOW will not work?

When we banned booze in Prohibition, a black market sprang up in booze.  Banning booze didn’t work.

When we banned drugs, a black market sprang up in drugs.  Banning drugs hasn’t worked.

When we suggest banning abortion, the gun-controllers (who tend be the same folks who support abortion) insist that banning abortion won’t work because a black market will spring up in abortions and women who want abortion will just find a back-alley abortionist on the black market.

Well, then, why do you gun-controllers suggest banning guns?

You have the historical proof that banning booze and drugs didn’t work, and you insist that banning abortions won’t work … so what makes you think banning guns will work?  What makes you think a black market in guns will not spring up?

Grab a microphone and edumicate us backward folk about the nuances of black markets.  Learn us what we need to know, enlighten us with your special insight into the workings of black markets.  Splain it to us, why black markets did spring up in booze and drugs, and would spring up in abortions, but somehow magically will not spring up in guns.  Even though they already exist (international arms dealers, gun runners and smugglers, anyone?).

When you push a policy that you KNOW will not work, it makes us suspicious of your motives.  We’ll be glad to work with you on solutions that can actually address the problem, but let’s not waste time on a policy that we all know will not work.
